Chama Gaucha Brazilian Steak House - Buckhead Atlanta Georgia

You can find Chama Gaucha Brazilian Steak House at 3365 Piedmont Rd NE, Ste 1350 Atlanta, GA 30305 pretty much in the heart of Buckhead. You can see one end from Peachtree and Piedmont streets but the entrance is really in the back, as is the valet. Of course with most eateries in Buckhead the challenge is parking - if you don't like to valet I suggest taking MARTA in and spending the day exploring. I mostly avoid Buckhead these days because of the parking situation - I simply don't have the patience for it anymore, especially with all the great restaurants elsewhere.

I decided with some friends to hit Chama Gaucha after the Brookhaven Beer Festival - we were basically buzzed and starving and felt like gorging on meats. We'd eaten at Fogo not too long ago so I suggested Chama as an alternative. We used the valet and spent a couple of hours there. You may already know if my high opinion of Fogo de Chao so naturally you'll see many comparisons following.

The difference between Chama and Fogo is stark - while the original Fogo de Chao is homey, well lit and a bit cramped, Chama is industrial, dark and very spacious - obviously the restaurant is looking for a bit different crowd. I think Fogo is also now looking for the same crowd - note the similar, industrial look of the Sandy Springs location. Which do I prefer from an esthetics perspective? I actually like the original location in Buckhead of Fogo better - maybe because I've eaten there so often, but there are other differences as I'll detail shortly.

When you approach the doorway you're greeted by a host station before a stunning array of wine bottles - seems Chama really aims to please the locals, who tend to drink quite a bit with dinner (not a bad idea, right?). To the side is a full bar and a short open atrium that leads to several dining rooms. The inside is dark and a bit moody with tables well apart - it also feels very spacious which is both a good and bad thing. At Fogo the tables are close together so the servers are always at hand, as are the churrasco rodizio servers - there's always someone at your table as long as you want food. With the tables further apart in a much larger space, there were times when my plate was empty and I was looking around for someone - it's a strange experience and not something you normally see at Fogo.

The menu at Chama is what you would expect - mostly drinks including the wine lists and beers, along with cocktails and specialty drinks.  The table service is quite simple - white tablecloths, napkins and plates.  At Chama you are given a a card that has green borders on one side (green = yes bring me meat!) and red borders on the other (red = I need a breather so stop asking if I want more meat!). I ordered a South American soda "Guarana Antarctica" which was sweet, cherry and citrus. Not bad but I only ordered it because I hadn't had one previously - I basically stuck with water. We took a look at the salad bar but as with Fogo I tend to forego the greens and stick with the meats. It appeared a bit smaller than Fogo but it's difficult to tell as the layout was different.

The table is brought plates of food - a creamy mashed potato, polenta cakes and fried bananas - this is similar to Fogo and provides a starchy contrast to the savory meats. Of course I tried a nibble of each but basically ignored them - as I was there for one thing. The meat handlers came around and I immediately started piling up my plate and pretty much finished each cut prior to the next server visiting the table. As mentioned previously, there were a few times when my plate was essentially empty - and interesting experience. I found the meats here to be on par with Fogo - essentially fantastic cuts and some of the best you'll find. If you haven't had this style of cooking before, they basically brine the outside of meats on skewers and put them on a rotisserie over live flame - these skewers (more like 30" swords) are brought around and the outside bit is cut for your enjoyment. My favorite cuts are the filet, the sirloin and the pecanha (a semi-circular cut of top sirloin). I'm also a big fan of the lamb chops - I tend to pass on the sausage, chicken and pork - not that they're bad but South America is really known for their beef.

I thought service was good when it was around and the food was very good - personally I will continue to go to Fogo de Chao - it fits more like a familiar glove. This place is nice - perhaps too nice for me?

Del Frisco's Grille - Buckhead - Atlanta Geogia

You can find Del Frisco's Grille at 3376 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30326 across the courtyard from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel - the restaurant location is not obvious and it will take you a couple of turns to find it. Once your in the valet courtyard you're good to go.

The interior of Del Frisco's is quite special -  the restaurant has a modernist fell with a really spectacular red light tower that climbs up an open atrium in the center across the floors - this motif is repeated elsewhere in red pendant lamps. Quite beautiful and a wonderful dinner or lunch setting. There are bars at both levels that look quite fun to visit - there's also a great elevated patio with fantastic views of Buckhead.

This is my first time at Del Frisco's so I had no expectations. I was there to attend a technology seminar, a bit of a lunch-and-learn, provided by Box, a secure content and file sharing technology services provider. As events go, this was very good as the content was interesting and the food superb. These tend to be a combination of informative and sales-pitch and in this case it was more the former.

We were presented a short menu with a couple of  entree and dessert selections. I went with the filet mignon (rare) which came with haricot vert and smashed potatoes - all was quite delicious. The meal started with a Grille salad - your basic mixed greens with cherry tomatoes and two thick slices of bacon - loved the house salad. For dessert I selected the ward chocolate cake a la mode.

The food at Del Frisco's reminded me quite a bit of the Capital Grill - I'd say they were directly competing and every bit as good.  I think the interior is aimed at a younger crowd, one that likes to socialize more at the bar before enjoying a delicious meal. It's a bit hipper based on the loud music, and less about formality. The service here was also quite good, overall a fantastic experience.

Morton's The Steakhouse - Downtown Atlanta Georgia

You can find this location of Morton's at 303 Peachtree Center Avenue NE, Atlanta, GA 30303 at the base of Suntrust Plaza (this is across Baker Street from the Hyatt Regency) and a bit hard to see until you're right up on it.

I have previously eaten at two other Morton's Steakhouses - first at the one that used to be in Buckhead and another time while in Chicago. Both previous experiences were quite good - I never revisited the Buckhead location due to its proximity to the Palm restaurant - also with Bones and Chops nearby it made for a hard choice. I ended up at this downtown location quite by accident while attending Dragon*Con. We were celebrating a birthday with a group of 17 people - calling around during that weekend was an impossible task however Morton's was able to take us right away - I think the overall price-point beyond most Dragon*Con revelers who tend to spend most of their money on alcohol or genre items while attending. We walked over from the Marriott and were seated immediately - they had set-up a long table with ample seating with only a 30 minute advance notice - quite nice.

This location of Morton's is a bit different from what I'm used to as there's a lack of windows or views - you're in a fairly large room with dimmed lighting - quite elegant actually in an old-school kind a way. This is how I was introduced to fine quality steaks 20 years ago and Morton's maintains those traditions. This is fine-dining with wood features, cloth napkins and very attentive service. What you'll find here are premium aged cuts of beef, fantastic fresh seafood and high quality side items. As a group we ordered quite a bit and everything I tasted was exceptional. I was also quite full by the end of the evening with a bit of a buzz from the drinks. I was alone so my part of the check came up to about $100 - those of you who know me know that I tend to be on the budget end of the scale when it comes to dining, however I do think that this was $100 well spent. The food and service here are top-notch - very difficult to get much better.

Having had it before, I would recommend the Bone-In Manhattan Sirloin, the Signature Cut Prime New York Strip, or the Center Cut Filet Mignon. If you're really hungry the Chicago Style Prime Bone-In Ribeye and the Porterhouse Steak are both fantastic. For you non-beef eaters (and what are you doing in a steakhouse?) I can recommend several of the Signature Dishes - the Beef Short Rib and Sea Scallop Surf & Turf is excellent as is the Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes and Chilean Sea Bass a la Nage. One of my favorites though is the Mixed Grill with a 6 oz Filet Mignon with 3 Grilled Shrimp and 2 Bacon Wrapped Sea Scallops - just delicious and what I ordered this evening (with a perfectly cooked rare steak). Our group ordered quite the variety and then shared several sides for the table - everything is à la carte but the side portions are quite large - look at the area on the menu "Side Dishes for Sharing."

I sipped down several Aviations - this cocktail isn't something you see very often.  I started with a Chopped Spinach Salad with bacon and egg that was delicious and perfectly dressed. We were provided with boules of soft onion bread that was quite delicious. I only tasted the brussel sprouts (not a big fan) and these were quite good as was the asparagus on my Mixed Grill.

As already mentioned, we had exceptional service - our waiter was very dry but extremely attentive. I think he was quite happy to see a bunch of people in T-shirts spending money - even if we were a bit under-dressed we certainly made his evening a bit more worthwhile.
