Bombay Club, Providence Rhode Island

(Also posted to Yelp)
Bombay Club is a venerable Indian institution located on 145 Dean St, towards the Eastern end of Atwells Ave about halfway down to Federal. It's a bit hard to see the small lit sign - there's free parking in the rear.

My dining companion lead me to Bombay Club on a Friday evening, a restaurant he visited while working in Providence a few years ago - seems it's been in the same location for some time and has a dated/dingy interior. Walking in it's apparent that most of the business is done through take-out. The staff was very courteous but seemed a bit at a loss regarding how to serve us.

We started off with a Frozen Mango Colanda - similar to a Mango Lassi sans curd and add rum - not a bad combo at all. We were served some papadum with a trio of chutneys.

The Non Veg Thali started with a milky soup full of fresh cilantro - reminded me of Thai Ga Gai (chicken coconut soup). There was plenty of food on the Thali but the spice levels were really low (I asked for hot). If you order this and you're a big eater you'll enjoy it - I ordered mine with lamb curry and chicken vindaloo.

My vegetarian dining companion did not have great luck in what he ordered - the Paneer Tikka Masala came out as a dry saute of paneer with vegetables. We sent it back and basically got the same paneer back, only this time in a sickly sweet milky sauce that could hardly be called Tikka Masala. He ended up eating it anyway but was greatly disappointed.

The naan and rice were both good. Service was spotty but in general the staff were really kind. We did have to hunt someone down for the check. In general this restaurant made me appreciate the great Indian food we have available in Atlanta. I'll soon be posting about a much better Indian food experience in Providence, at Kabob and Curry on Thayer St by the campus.
