You can find Makan Restaurant & Bar at 130 Clairemont Avenue Suite 100, Decatur, GA 30030 attached to the Courtyard Atlanta Decatur Downtown/Emory on the corner of Clairemont Ave and Marshall St - the entry is about a block from Ponce and near downtown. Parking can be found in several paid lots or on the street - note that if you park on the street you will need to pay using one of the handy meters (which sends you an SMS if your time is running out and you can add time via the same credit card - quite handy). The restaurant main entrance is from the lobby of the Courtyard hotel, on the left when you walk in.
Makan is a Chinese and Korean influenced restaurant with a high profile image and a beautifully designed interior. I was first introduced to this place by Ben G, the previous YCM for Atlanta during one of his YEVs. That was quite a night with many dishes and drinks. I've been wanting to come back to Makan but this part of town is much less convenient to me than it was when I was living on the East side - so when Stephie Z scheduled a lunch UYE (https://www.yelp.com/events/decatur-decatur-lunch-uye-makan) I decided to attend. If you guys don't understand all the acronyms, they have to do with scheduled Yelp events - some official and some informal/unofficial. Unofficial (UYE = Unofficial Yelp Event) are put together by Yelpers who want to explore a restaurant or otherwise schedule a get together to eat, meet other Yelpers and really to just have a reason to have fun. They are a great way to meet other Yelpers and explore Atlanta and I recommend them highly.
On this day we explored the new Brunch menu (Makan is only open for Brunch on the weekends offering up a limited dim sum style menu) and had a couple of beers for good measure. Great way to spend a Friday afternoon, by the way. We ordered a few starters and I ended up with the ramen:
Sui Mai - steamed in wonton wrapper (Shrimp and Pork). I thought these were OK but not great.
Beef Meat Balls - marinated minced beef in some type of ponzu. These reminded me of the contents of a Chinese pot sticker. I liked them.
Roasted Pork Bun - this was very delicious - in fact I think Makan does pork the best and most of the items on the menu are made with pork.
Roasted Duck Bun - local organic duck, cucumber, radish and hoisin. This was a weird mix of textures - the meat was dry while the fat was fatty/greasy. It was offset a bit by the cucumber and sweetness of the hoisin but I was hoping for something a bit more distinctive.
Miso Ramen - overnight pork and chicken broth, miso, Sun Noodles, scallions, roasted pork belly with spicy umami bomb. I liked this quite a bit but I've had better. Still very filling and will get your Asian on...
Overall I think the dinner experience is better than the brunch dim sum. Service was fantastic as usual and the conversation and company were superb. We hit Butter and Cream afterwards.
